The US preventive tasks force emphasizes once again the importance of folic acid supplementation

At the beginning of 2017, the US Preventive Services Tasks Force (USPSTF) emphasized once again the importance of folic acid supplementation for the women in child-bearing age. Indeed, the USPSTF recommends that all women who are planning or capable of pregnancy take a dietary supplement based on folic acid.

These recommendations have been drafted in the light of the latest prevalence data for neural tube defects. Based on the data obtained between 2009 and 2011, the prevalence of spina bifida and anencephaly still reached nearly 6.5 births per 10,000 in the United States. The USPSTF therefore emphasizes the importance of folic acid supplementation during the periconceptional period in order to avoid the appearance of such anomalies.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN, Washington, DC) also echoed these new recommendations in a statement. The CRN stresses that the recommended doses of folic acid are present in most food supplements intended for pregnant women.
